Core Learning Exchange raises more than $200,000

BOULDER — Core Learning Exchange, a company whose platform helps teachers customize their curriculum to individual student needs, has raised $215,000 in capital.

With the platform, students can have diagnostics that determine their learning style, and then teachers can develop customized learning plans for each student, using a mix of the traditional classroom setting and online education.

“A teacher can create a playlist of learning activities they select from our digital curriculum marketplace, and remix the content to meet each student’s individual needs,” CEO and founder Jeff Katzman told BizWest. “Each student has customized learning targets, and they can achieve those targets with personalized, remixed versions of the digital curriculum.”

WomenGive, a program of United Way of Larimer County, was started in Larimer County in 2006 as an opportunity for women in our community to come together to help other women.

Core Learning Exchange also has a unique business model: revenue is shared between the company itself, and the teachers who post curriculum plans to the marketplace.

This lets teachers have better tools at their fingertips than the traditional textbooks they use today, and flows the money that would usually go to large school-supply publishers back to the teachers themselves.

Core Learning Exchange focuses mostly on third grade through 12th grade, for core subjects such as language arts, math, science and social studies, as well as career and technical education for older students. The only requirement is that students have some sort of connected device, Katzman said, but the format works well for virtual schools, traditional classrooms and homeschools.

The company started development on the platform in 2015. It has a few dozen teachers using it so far, Katzman said. The capital, in the form of convertible notes, is being used to fund operations and for product development.
