Tri-State shuts down Western Slope coal mine
Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association has shut down a coal mine on the Western Slope.
The Denver Business Journal reports that Tri-State, based in Westminster, has closed the New Horizon Mine in Nucla. Tri-State has shifted to a reclamation activities at the mine.
The closure eliminate 500 megawatts of electricity used at two coal-fired power plants, according to the DBJ. New Horizon Mine currently employs 23 people.
