Xcel Energy proposes natural-gas rate hike

Xcel Energy Inc. is seeking a three-year rate increase for natural gas, beginning in 2018.

The Denver Business Journal Reports that Xcel will seek approval from the Colorado Public Utilities Commission for the rate hike, citing capital improvements made since its last rate review in 2015. Xcel already has a three-year agreement for electric rates.

Xcel has spent $300 million annually on capital improvements — now totaling $1.8 billion — and plans a similar outlay over the next three years. The rate increase would generate about $139 million in annual funding from 2018 through 2020.

The PUC would decide on the rate increase in the fourth quarter.
