Hickenlooper, Anheuser-Busch toast $28M investment for brewery in Fort Collins

FORT COLLINS — Gov. John Hickenlooper, a former brewer, on Tuesday joined Anheuser-Busch leaders in celebrating plans for $28 million in investments to its brewery in Fort Collins and $1.4 million in recent updates to its nearby Global Barley Research Center.

The investments will support expansion of the aluminum bottle line and implementation of new technology, such as new dry-hop capabilities that allow the brewery in Fort Collins to brew styles of beer that require various quantities of hops.

The Colorado investments are part of Anheuser-Busch’s national commitment of almost $500 million across its facilities in the United States in 2017, and $2 billion through 2020.

“These new investments, Anheuser-Busch’s large local workforce and this globally significant barley research add significantly to the strength of Colorado’s beer sector,” Hickenlooper said. “Given my roots in the industry, it’s especially gratifying to see the industry continue to grow in Colorado.”

The Anheuser-Busch Barley Research Center, staffed primarily by alumni of Colorado universities, supports farmers who supply barley for both Anheuser-Busch and other brewers worldwide through the development of barley that is resistant to drought and pests.

“This investment is a vote of confidence in Anheuser-Busch’s Colorado employees and the future of the Colorado beer industry,” said brewery general manager Eugene Bocis. “We are proud to be supporting local jobs and economic growth with this investment and investments that have come before, such as the $1.4 million remodel of the Barley Research Center.”
