Xcel Energy recognizes cannabis company for its efficiency achievements

DENVER — LivWell Enlightened Health, one of the largest cannabis companies and dispensaries in Colorado, won an award from Xcel Energy for its energy efficiency.

The 2016 Lighting Efficiency Achievement Award was given to LivWell for achieving the highest energy savings in a single lighting project within the state, according to a news release.

“We are honored to receive this award from Xcel Energy, a first for the cannabis industry,” John Lord, owner and CEO of LivWell Enlightened Health, said in a prepared statement. “I could not be more proud of the hard work put in by our team to achieve greater energy efficiency in our cultivation operations. We aim to continue our leadership in this area and set a positive example for our industry peers.”

LivWell got the award for its reduction of electricity consumption in one of its primary cultivation facilities, by expanding its use of LED lighting. The company achieved an annual savings of more than 2.9 million kilowatt hours — nearly 3 gigawatt hours.

Those savings are equivalent to the amount of energy used to power 176 homes in a year.

Xcel presents the efficiency-achievement awards annually to recognize its customers that work toward sustainable practices and encourage others to do the same.

Recently, LivWell also received Xcel’s first rebate to a cannabis company — nearly $50,000 was given to LivWell in 2016 for its significant reduction in electricity costs.
