DoorDash launches restaurant delivery service in most of Boulder Valley

After launching in Denver two years ago, San Francisco-based DoorDash starting Wednesday is offering delivery from restaurants to doorsteps throughout Boulder, Lafayette, Louisville, Superior and Broomfield.

Customers can place orders online at www.doordash.com. Apps for iPhones and Androids are available at the App Store and Google Play.

The company will be delivering for approximately 220 restaurants in the area, including fast-food chains and local favorites Modern Market, Five on Black, Foolish Craig’s, Beau Jo’s, Pizzeria Locale and The Kitchen Next Door, according to a company statement.

DoorDash’s national partnerships with The Cheesecake Factory, Red Robin and Taco Bell will also extend to Boulder.

To celebrate the launch, the delivery fee will be waived for customers on their first order, and delivery fees will be $1 to $2 for the next month.

Restaurants pay DoorDash a commission for orders they receive from the DoorDash platform.

Orders are placed via the DoorDash platform and Dashers go to the restaurant, pick up, and then deliver orders to customers. Many restaurants use a DoorDash tablet to receive orders, but the company works with merchants to determine the process that works best for their operations. Restaurants do not have to buy a DoorDash software.

Dashers are independent contractors. They use a variety of vehicles to complete deliveries, including cars, bikes and scooters. They are paid a flat fee per delivery plus a tip from customers.

DoorDash declined to reveal annual revenue.

DoorDash was founded in 2013 by Stanford students Andy Fang, Stanley Tang and Tony Xu. It has received $180 million in funding from Sequoia, KPCB, CRV, Khosla Ventures, SV Angel and Y Combinator. The company has delivery operations in approximately 300 cities in the United States and Canada.
