Newton Software aims to double Fort Collins presence with new Old Town office

FORT COLLINS — Newton Software, a San Francisco company that opened an office in Fort Collins in 2014, is doubling down on its local presence with a new space in Old Town and plans to hire 25 more employees in the next eight to 10 months.

Joel Passen, cofounder and head of marketing for Newton, said in a phone interview Tuesday that the company has leased roughly 5,000 square feet at 145 E. Mountain Ave. He said the plan is to grow from 15 to 40 employees in the coming months, though the new digs give Newton room for up to 60 people eventually.

Founded in 2009, Newton Software makes hiring software for small- and medium-sized businesses. The company, which does just shy of $10 million in annual sales, was acquired by Cincinnati-based Paycor in December but has continued to operate as a standalone company. In the short time since the acquisition, Newton has grown from 27 to 48 employees companywide.

When Newton leadership began looking for a second location in 2013, Passen said the company initially eyed Boulder; Portland, Ore.; and Boise, Idaho. But he said Newton ended up coming to Fort Collins thanks to a mix of good office availability and a solid engineering talent pool with less competition for it than places such as Silicon Valley. He said proximity to Colorado State University was also a draw.

The Mountain Avenue office will mark the third locally for Newton, having most recently grown out of its space on Mason Court.

While the Fort Collins office started out as an engineering outpost, Passen said the relocation of longtime Newton executive Jonathan Chenard, the head of services and customer support, to Fort Collins earlier this year means the local office will expand as a services center.

New hiring — the company’s website includes nine local job postings already — will be a mix of customer success/support functions and software engineers and developers. Most sales and marketing functions, meanwhile, will remain in San Francisco.
