Boulder County Farmers Market to open LoDo location June 4

BOULDER — Boulder County Farmers Markets, the nonprofit organization that operates seasonal outdoor markets in downtown Boulder and at the Boulder County Fairgrounds in Longmont, has set June 4 for the opening day of its third location at the newly renovated Union Station transportation hub in Lower Downtown Denver.

The Union Station Farmers Market will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Saturday through Oct. 22 on the north side of Wynkoop Plaza at 17th and Wynkoop streets.

On its opening day, the market will host vegetable tastings, giveaways of “Market Bucks” and a demonstration featuring Peter Varkonyi, chef at Beast + Bottle in Denver. The market’s weekly chef demo program, featuring local chefs and seasonal ingredients, is sponsored by EAT Denver.

In its inaugural season, the Union Station Farmers Market will feature 40 vendors: 22 Colorado farms, 16 locally produced foods and two restaurants. Vendors will include The Fresh Herb Co., a Boulder Farmers’ Market founding member, as well as first-time vendors such as Denver Botanic Garden’s Chatfield Farm, Bean Acres Farm and Living Land Farm.

“Bringing a growers-only market to downtown Denver is directly aligned with our nonprofit’s mission,” said Brian Coppom, executive director of Boulder County Farmers Markets. “We will accept SNAP benefits at the info booth and are currently seeking funding to double those benefits at the market, like we do in Boulder and Longmont.”

The Union Station market is supported by the Union Station Alliance, Downtown Denver Partnership and the Regional Transportation District. Its launch and promotion were assisted by a grant in October from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
