Weather delays reduce list of tenants to open in Foothills mall’s first wave
FORT COLLINS — The first phase of the Foothills Mall redevelopment project — including fewer stores than initially announced because of weather delays — will open in November, according to the city and the developer.
A joint statement issued Monday by the city of Fort Collins and Greenwood Village-based Alberta Development Partners listed the tenants planning to open in that initial phase. They include Macy’s, Nordstrom Rack and the nine-screen Cinemark movie theater, as well as Bar Louie, Bath & Body Works, Daz Bog Coffee, Finish Line, Francesca’s, Grimaldi’s, Gymboree, H&M, Hot Topic, Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, Vans, Verizon, Victoria’s Secret, Zales and Zumiez. The first phase includes 602,635 square feet of leasable space and common areas.
Several tenants that initially were scheduled to open as part of Phase 1 cannot start business until next spring because of delays caused by rains in the first half of 2015, according to the statement.
“In May, for instance, Fort Collins saw 6.22 inches of rain, three times more than average, making it the fifth rainiest May in recorded history,” the statement said. “This unusually high amount of precipitation caused 82 lost workdays out of a total of 182 possible workdays at Foothills Mall from Jan. 1 through July 30.”
Tenants in the 111,134-square-foot Phase 2 of the project are scheduled to open in summer 2016, according to the city and developer.
“We’re eager to deliver the final product,” said Don Provost, founding principal of Alberta Development Partners, “confident that Foothills Mall will be a thriving, vibrant retail and community experience that residents of Fort Collins will value and enjoy for many years to come.”
“This year has proven to be very challenging for construction and renovation projects all over Fort Collins,” added Fort Collins city manager Darin Atteberry. “We know that Fort Collins residents are eager to shop at the new Foothills Mall, and we appreciate the public’s understanding as the city of Fort Collins and local developers work collaboratively to see these projects through to completion.”
The shopping and entertainment center at South College Avenue and East Foothills Parkway opened as Foothills Fashion Mall in 1973.
When finally complete, the redevelopment will include 365,321 square feet of retail space in the enclosed mall, 278,744 square feet of detached retail space and the three-level, 24,659-square-foot Foothills Activity Center which replaces the old Youth Activity Center that had been at the corner of Monroe and Stanford drives.
Alberta’s other area developments include the University Square shopping area in Greeley.
