Lucky’s Market plans flagship store at former Boulder Savers site

BOULDER — Lucky’s Market, a Boulder-based natural-foods grocer, will open a new 32,000-square-foot flagship store at the former Savers site in south Boulder, company officials announced Tuesday.

The new store, Lucky’s Market’s third in Boulder County along with its north Boulder and Longmont locations, will employ about 130 people. The store will be the rapidly growing chain’s 13th nationwide.

Bo Sharon, who co-founded Lucky’s with his wife, Trish, in 2003, said in a phone interview that the store is slated to open sometime in early 2016 after extensive renovations of the building’s interior and some upgrades to the front of the building are complete.

Ways to thank a caregiver

If you have a caregiver or know someone who has been serving as a primary caregiver, March 3rd is the day to reach out and show them how much they are valued!

Sharon declined to divulge the length of the lease Lucky’s signed but said, “We’ll be there for awhile.”

Lucky’s plans clear up at least some of the mystery surrounding the future of the 695 S. Broadway site, a 40,000-square foot building constructed in 1980 that up until last fall housed a Savers thrift store, a Dollar Tree store, a Laundromat and a costume store. There were rumors then that those stores were all losing their leases because the building was being sold to make way for a new Whole Foods Market.

Boulder-based development and property management firm W.W. Reynolds Cos., which owns the entire Table Mesa Shopping Center that sits between King Soopers to the west and Broadway to the east, purchased the 695 S. Broadway property in May for $4.635 million.

In addition to news of the new store, Lucky’s also announced Tuesday that it was launching the Lucky’s Community Project, an ongoing effort to create change in communities the chain serves through supporting youth and education, community health and resilience programs.

“We are thrilled to make even more of an impact in our hometown, and support more individuals and programs with the opening of our new store in South Boulder early next year,” Sharon said in the company’s announcement. “We’re also excited to be able to bring more affordable organic, specialty and local food options to the Boulder community and help all people eat a bit healthier. This will be a one-stop-shop for people who simply love good food.”

At 32,000 square feet, the new store will be Lucky’s Market’s largest of the three Colorado stores but not overall. That honor goes to the 40,000-square-foot store in Gainesville, Fla.

Lucky’s has stores in Iowa, Indiana, Wyoming, Michigan, Florida, Missouri, Kentucky, Montana and Ohio. The chain also has plans to this year open a second St. Louis store, as well as stores in Savannah, Ga.; Coral Springs and Naples, Fla.; and Lexington, Ky. Without offering specifics, Sharon told BizWest he’s also seeking out other locations along Colorado’s Front Range.

“To say the least, this is our hometown, so we love building stores here,” he said.

The south Boulder store will continue the chain’s model of offering local, natural and organic foods, in addition to staple items such as Campbell’s soup. It will also feature in-house cured and smoked bacon, fresh seafood and a full bakery. Like other Lucky’s locations, the store will host free wellness activities and community events.

Plans for the rest of the building at 695 S. Broadway have not yet been announced, and an official for W.W. Reynolds couldn’t be reached for comment Tuesday.

“Lucky’s Market will bring to South Boulder many exciting new shopping options,” William Reynolds, owner of W.W. Reynolds, said in a statement. “We are very fortunate to have our homegrown grocer as an anchor at Table Mesa.”
