Boulder, Larimer, Weld counties make marijuana sales top 10

Boulder, Larimer and Weld counties were among the top 10 Colorado counties for medical and retail marijuana sales in pounds last year, according to the state Department of Revenue.

The 2014 numbers indicate that medical marijuana sales still generates higher volumes than retail marijuana in many counties, according to a report released Friday by the department’s Marijuana Enforcement Division. The report was the first of its kind to look at a variety of topics surrounding retail and medical marijuana.

Statewide, 833 businesses were licensed to sell retail marijuana and 1,416 were licensed to sell medical marijuana as of December 2014. Medical marijuana business licenses grew by less about 80 from January through December of last year, while retail business licenses surged to more than 830 in December from about 400 in January.

Almost 110,000 pounds of medical flower marijuana were sold, while almost 38,700 pounds of retail flower marijuana were sold. That’s less than a half ounce of flower marijuana bought per capita last year, not including street sales.

By far the most medical flower marijuana was sold in Denver County at more than 62,600 pounds. Almost 8,500 pounds were sold in Boulder County, while more than 3,700 pounds were sold in Larimer County. Almost 1,600 pounds were sold in Weld County.

Retail flower marijuana sales surpassed 23,000 pounds in Denver County, again the most in the state. Boulder County recorded almost 5,100 pounds in sales, while Larimer County posted more than 1,000 pounds.

Of those counties, Weld was the only county that had higher retail flower sales at nearly 1,800 pounds than medical sales in pounds.

More than 4.8 million edible marijuana products were sold in 2014. Of that total, almost 2.9 million retail edible products and 1.9 million medical edible products were sold last year.
