95% of Coloradans given option to renew health plan

Beginning in October, notices went out to 95 percent of Colorado consumers giving them the option to renew their health care policy for 2014, rather than have the policy canceled, according to the Division of Insurance.

Many policies had to be canceled because of new rules stemming from the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, but most consumers in Colorado were offered the option to renew their plans and continue them into 2014. Any policy that was not renewed will be canceled and will no longer be available in the new year.

The Division does not yet have statistics on how many consumers chose to take advantage of the renewal opportunity, according to Vincent Plymell, communications manager for the Division of Insurance.

Those plans that were renewed will remain in effect for 12 months from the renewal date, Plymell said. Deadlines for renewal vary by carrier.
