What is this thing called success?

I often ask candidates to define the word success. I might ask, “What does being successful look like for you?”  I have no hidden agenda. There is no “right” answer. Mostly I just enjoy hearing what folks have to say on the subject.

Some candidates stammer. Some offer canned responses. Some wax poetic. A few actually seem to know what it means for them to be successful. Remarkable.

Over the years I have come to realize that most of us really have no clue how to define success.
