Longmont sales-, use-tax revenue up

LONGMONT – The city of Longmont’s sales- and use-tax collections increased 3 percent in May compared with the same period a year ago, according to the city finance department’s latest report.

Longmont collected $3,819,984 in May, compared with $3,710,082 collected in May 2011. The collection in May represents sales made in April.

The sales-tax component of collections increased 2.4 percent from the same month the year before, and the use-tax component increased by 9.9 percent.

Total sales- and use-tax collections year-to-date increased 3.1 percent compared with 2011, according to the report.

Automotive, food and general categories all showed gains year-to-date compared with the same period in 2011. Automotive sales-tax revenue was up 8.5 percent; food sales tax was up 7.6 percent and general sales tax was up 5.3 percent, for the year to date. Utilities’ sales-tax revenue showed a decrease of 9.9 percent, year-to-date, compared with the same period in 2011.

Lumber, manufacturing and vehicle categories all showed increases in use-tax revenues as well for the year to date. Lumber use-tax revenue was up 27.2 percent; manufacturing use-tax revenue was up 45.5 percent; and vehicle use tax revenue was up 5.6 percent, compared with the same period in 2011.

In total, sales- and use-tax revenue collected in April, along with previous tax revenue collected in 2012, represents 31.3 percent of the cumulative 2012 Longmont city budget, according to the finance department’s latest tax report.

City lodging-tax revenue decreased 1.7 percent month over month, with $18,790 in lodging-tax revenue collected from hotels in May for the month of April, compared with $19,122 in April 2011.
