Net taxable sales up in Fort Collins

FORT COLLINS – Net taxable sales in Fort Collins were up 3.6 percent
from May 2010 to May 2011, according to the latest figures from the
city’s finance department.

Net taxable amounts are the amount of goods sold or purchased that are
subject to sales or use tax; May figures are based on sales in April.
The city is using this statistic to allow for analysis of year-over-year
numbers, as tax collections are skewed by the addition of the 0.85
percent “Keep Fort Collins Great” tax increase approved on the November
2010 ballot that went into effect in January.

In May, this tax resulted in $1.48 million in collections for the city.
Total sales and use tax collected were $7.3 million for May 2011, up
from just over $6 million in May 2010.

Retail sales in the downtown area reported in May increased 2 percent
from the same period in 2010, and lodging taxes collected in May were up
13.8 percent from last May.

Year to date, net taxable sales are up 4.1 percent, in 15 of 18 categories of taxable businesses.
