Larimer County declares Crystal Fire emergency
LARIMER COUNTY – The Board of Larimer County Commissioners Thursday
approved a Declaration of Emergency for the unincorporated area of the
county affected by the Crystal Fire.
The fire began on Saturday, April 2, and continues to burn northwest of
Masonville. The Larimer County Sheriff’s Office reported that the
3,200-acre blaze was 55 percent contained by Friday morning, and 15
homes have been lost.
“The declaration or lack of a declaration does not affect the response
to the incident,´ said Larimer County Commissioner Steve Johnson in a
prepared statement. “It relates more to who is going to pay for the
costs of the incident, and that is often determined days later when the
nature of the incident and the ownership of the land are determined in
consultation with state and federal authorities.”
Property losses are still being assessed, but the sheriff’s office has
estimated the cost of fighting the fire at $1.7 million so far.
