Boulder backs small business

BOULDER-The city of Boulder is jumping on the bandwagon of communities and business organizations that are hoping to drum up sales for small retailers.

Boulder will participate in the first-ever “Small Business Saturday” on Nov. 27. The event is intended to recognize the value and contributions locally owned, independent businesses make to their community.

“Here in Boulder, we know how valuable small businesses are to our community,” Mayor Susan Osborne said in a statement. “I strongly encourage our residents to show their support for the many small businesses that form the backbone of our local economy by shopping and using their services on Nov. 27 and throughout the year.”

There were nearly 28 million small businesses in the United States last year, and small business created 65 percent of new jobs over the past two decades, according to data from the U.S. Small Business Administration cited in the press release.

Civic Economics, a consulting firm, estimates that for every $100 spent in locally-owned, independent stores, $68 returns to the community through taxes, payroll and other expenditures, the release said.
