CSU projects receive seed grants

FORT COLLINS – The Clean Energy Supercluster will distribute almost $200,000 in seed grant funds to 13 projects at Colorado State University.

The third round of seed grants will go to projects spanning five colleges and 15 departments that include 33 faculty members, students and others.

“These researchers are at the cutting edge in their fields, so we’re looking forward to their results and hope to share them with our business partners where appropriate,´ said Bryan Willson, director of the Clean Energy Supercluster and chief scientific officer of Cenergy, the technology transfer company attached to the Supercluster.

The projects receiving awards in this round span three main topics – biofuels and emerging technology; solar, wind and efficiency; and cross-cutting topics. The largest awards, at $20,000 each, went to:

  • “Energy Storage Systems Utilized for Smart-Grid Applications” led by Peter Young in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering; and Daniel Zimmerle in the Department of Mechanical Engineering;
  • “BIOCHAR: An Assessment of Potential Energy, Environmental and Economic Benefits” led by Francesca Cotrufo and Catherine Keske in the Department of Soil and Crop Sciences; and Morgan DeFoort in the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

The 13 awards received, ranging from $7,500 to $20,000, total $198,400.
