US 34 reopens four days ahead of schedule

ESTES PARK – The Colorado Department of Transportation announced that US Highway 34 just east of Estes Park – closed since Feb. 3 for bridge repair work – has reopened four days ahead of schedule.

“Our contractor has been working extremely hard over the last eight days in order to reopen US 34 before Sunday, Feb. 14,´ said Scott Ellis, CDOT resident engineer. “By prefabricating much of the new bridge and working nearly 24 hours a day, crews were able to complete the work and reopen US 34 four days ahead of schedule and in time for the holiday weekend.”

CDOT still has one more bridge to replace on US 34 at milepost 66.3, which will require another full closure of the road for about 12 days. The second closure is currently set to take place March 1 through March 12, but may be moved up to the week of Feb. 22 to take advantage of good weather.

SEMA Construction is the contractor for the $3.8 million project, scheduled to be complete by the Memorial Day weekend.
