Greeley chamber honors benefactor Winograd

GREELEY – Philanthropist Florence Winograd, whose late husband brought her from her native Washington, D.C., to what she now calls “this heaven on earth called Greeley,” received one of the city’s top community service awards Thursday night.

The Greeley Chamber of Commerce honored 60-year resident Winograd with the annual Leann Anderson Community Care Award during the group’s annual dinner at the Island Grove Events Center.

Winograd’s late husband, Harold, was one of the most prominent members of Greeley’s business and civic communities as the founder, president and CEO of Winograd Steel & Supply Co.

Empowering communities

Rocky Mountain Health Plans (RMHP), part of the UnitedHealthcare family, has pledged its commitment to uplift these communities through substantial investments in organizations addressing the distinct needs of our communities.

Greeley schools and colleges, including Aims Community College, the University of Northern Colorado and Weld District 6 public schools, became beneficiaries of the fortune that the Winograds accumulated during six decades in business. Scores of students have received scholarships from funds endowed by the Winograds over the years.

In accepting the award Winograd, 85, recalled how her husband, whom she met while he was stationed in Washington in the Navy in 1942, extolled the virtues of Greeley. “I nicknamed him Mr. Greeley Chamber of Commerce,” she told the chamber audience of about 430.

Businesses honored at the event included Weiss Jewelers, agricultural co-op Agland Inc. and directory publisher RR Donnelley Co., all recipients of the Greeley Grade Circle of Excellence Award, the chamber’s highest business honor.
