With more than $9 billion in annual sales, Swift & Co. declares it is the world’s second-largest processor of fresh beef and pork.
Incorporated in Chicago by Massachusetts butcher Gustavus Swift in 1875, Swift Independent Packing Co. was acquired by Monfort of Colorado Inc. in 1982. Monfort and Swift were purchased by ConAgra in 1987, and in 1994, ConAgra renamed Monfort’s pork division Swift & Co. When ConAgra sold its beef division in September 2002, its new owners named the entire business Swift & Co.
Swift & Co. is privately owned by Dallas-based investment group HM Capital Partners and Booth Creek Management Corp. of Vail, who jointly purchased the business for an estimated $1.4 billion.

Swift’s corporate headquarters is in The Promontory in west Greeley, where about 440 people are employed after a layoff of 70 in January. The company employs about 1,700 workers at its northeast Greeley beef and lamb processing plants.
Swift also has beef processing plants in Cactus, Texas; Grand Island, Neb., and Hyrum, Utah. It has pork processing plants in Marshalltown, Iowa, Louisville, Ky. and Worthington, Minn. The company employs about 14,000 in the United States and about 5,000 in its Swift Australia division, where it has four beef processing plants and four feedlots.
Swift distribution centers are located in Phoenix; Denver; Miami; Grand Island, Neb.; Seabrook, N.J.; and McAllen, Texas
The company’s international sales offices are in Hong Kong; Tokyo; Monterrey, Mexico; Seoul, South Korea; Shanghai, China; and Taipei, Taiwan.
