Weld loses no. 1 ranking

It’s never easy stepping down from the top of the podium. The humiliation, the embarrassment, the front row seat to your fading domination – I doubt Weld County felt any of this as it relinquished the title of U.S. Foreclosure Capital.

In September 2006 the Denver Post ran a story that Weld County had the most foreclosures based on data compiled by RealtyTrac. Only three months later MSN has released a story announcing Detroit as the new leader in foreclosures – again, according to RealtyTrac data.

If Weld has any aspirations of taking back the crown, then it had better get busy. One in every 80 households in Detroit is in foreclosure; the best Weld could do at its zenith was one in every 136. At that rate, Weld would place 10th on the list of the top 100 metro areas with the highest number of foreclosures – seven spots behind the Denver-Aurora area.

Good sign

Distraught Detroiters looking for answers, direction or a sign over what to do as creditors repossess their homes might simply try looking up. No, not that high up.

The State of Wyoming is in the midst of an employee shortage. The shortage is so severe in fact, that economic development groups in Wyoming have rented billboard space along Interstate 75 outside Flint, Mich., one hour north of Detroit, that reads “Live & Work in Wyoming!” with the Web address www.jobswyoming.net. The idea is to recruit unemployed auto workers, such as welders, to the Wyoming oil fields where their valuable skills are needed.

Just ignore the irony that there are not enough homes in Wyoming to house the workers it already has.

If Weld has any aspirations of taking…
