Growth means new digs for software company

GREELEY — A Greeley-based software company that aims to help parents keep better track of student grades and progress is getting a new home in the Promontory business park in west Greeley.

Excelsior Software, now located at 980 37th Avenue Court, has purchased a three-acre site in Promontory between ConAgra and State Farm Insurance. Brad Baird, vice president for sales and marketing, said the company plans to break ground on the building “by mid-year 2007.” Construction of the new facility is projected to take six to nine months.

Baird said the new headquarters will be about 30,000 square feet, “not quite triple our existing space.”

Architect for the $5 million project is Virginia-based Phil Pokorny and Associates and Jim Rawson of Snowdance Group in Greeley will lead the project management team. Drexel Barrell & Co. in Greeley is engineering the project and Realtec Commercial Real Estate Services in Greeley handled the land purchase.

Baird said Excelsior plans to hire additional staff after moving into the new building. “We’re really growing out of our current facility, and it’s hard to say how quickly that will happen, but we do see a need to hire additional staff,” he said.

The company currently employs 72 people. Baird said Excelsior has been averaging about 30 percent annual growth in recent years and is expecting about 20 percent growth this year.

“It’s a very competitive market and we’re not alone doing what we do,” he said. “But with the additional pressures being placed on teachers and the fact that we focus on the classroom and that’s our specialty, we’ve been fortunate to ride that wave.”

The company’s software, when purchased and used by a school district, allows parents to go online and check their children’s educational progress, test scores and attendance at any time without waiting for a parent-teacher conference.

Excelsior Software was founded in 1987 in College Station, Texas and moved its operations to Greeley in 1990. It’s been in its current location since 1991.
