Investigate complaints quickly, take action if problem is found

Question: My boss is treating me unfairly at work because of my age. She doesn’t give me the same types of responsibilities that some of my younger co-workers with the same job titles have. I’ve tried to speak with her about it several times and it doesn’t help. What should I do?

Answer: Discrimination and harassment at your workplace should be reported. If your company already has a complaint process for reporting such conduct, you should use it. If this means complaining to the person who is discriminating or harassing (like your boss), then you should complain to her manager. Your company is required to investigate a complaint and quickly take action if they find a problem.

In the event of a lawsuit, your boss could have a defense to discrimination or harassment claims if she shows that she took reasonable care to stop or make changes to her actions.

In Colorado, 1 in 3 women, 1 in 3 men and 1 in 2 transgender individuals will experience an attempted or completed sexual assault in their lifetime. During April, we recognize Sexual Assault Awareness Month with the hopes of increasing conversations about this very important issue.

Question: My ex-wife and I have struggled the past few holidays about visitation with our kids. What can I do to avoid conflicts with her this holiday season?

Answer: Review the written agreement or court order regarding parenting time-be sure you are familiar with the schedule, and see if changes need to be made.

Make arrangements at least 60 days in advance, confirming all agreements in writing so there are no questions as to the schedule.

Judges do not like being faced with emergency requests as to holiday parenting time during December.

Don’t ask your children their preferences or have them “deliver messages” to the other parent.

If traveling out of the area during holidays, give contact information to the other parent so that the child can talk to each parent during the holiday.
