The Eye: Living large: A house fit for a CEO

When Hensel-Phelps Construction Co. reports its revenue for 2004, a small chunk will have come from company CEO Jerry Morgensen.

Morgensen has taken out a permit to build a 13,000-square-foot home on 59th Avenue on Greeley’s west side. The estimated construction value on the permit: $2.2 million.

As you might expect with a mansion of that size, there’s a requisite “wow” factor.

Details of the permit, as filed with the Weld County Building Department, include: a 1,500-square-foot garage, a 2,500-square-foot walk-out basement, 342-square-foot stone-front deck, a pool, theater room, three masonry fireplaces and one gas-log fireplace.

This isn’t official, but the Eye expects Morgensen will have himself the priciest palace in the history of Weld County when he gets the keys.

“I don’t know for a fact, but I cannot recall one in unincorporated Weld County with that high of a valuation,´ said Jeff Reif, chief building official for the county.

In order to get a sense of how large the construction magnate will be living, consider that seven homes of 1,850 square feet each will fit inside the Morgensen mansion. That’s roughly a block of houses from a middle-class neighborhood.

One thing is true: When it comes time for the final building inspection, it will be easier on Reif and his staff to sign off on the Morgensen house than seven new houses.

By the way, Morgensen will be helping Hensel-Phelps connect to its roots. The company, now one of the largest commercial contractors in the country, started out building homes in 1937.

Morgensen has hired Hensel-Phelps to build the new digs.

He shouldn’t have any hassles with the contractor.
