Musical theater production celebrates winter solstice

BOULDER — Rocky Mountain Revels, a nonprofit arts organization, will be performing “The Christmas Revels: A Celtic Celebration of the Winter Solstice” four times Dec. 19-21 at the Boulder Theater.

“The Christmas Revels” weaves together many of the traditions of the Celtic countries in celebration of the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year. This year’s show features pipers, an Irish fiddle band, Irish step dancers, Scottish Highland dancers, a traditional brass quintet, an ancient Welsh storyteller, the ghost of Mari Lywd and an audience singalong with traditional carols.

“It’s a very different mix of musical theater that people are very much touched by,´ said Janet Braccio, a spokeswoman for Rocky Mountain Revels. “It reaches everyone. It’s not religiously or age oriented.”

Moving the production this year, from the University Theater to the Boulder Theater, should also be good for the show, Braccio said. “It’s so good for downtown Boulder,” she said. “We’ve sold out twice at CU at the University Theater. It gives us an opportunity to reach a larger audience.”

Show times will be 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 19; 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 20; and 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec 21. Tickets are available at the Boulder Theater box office or online at www.bouldertheater.com. Prices range from $16 to $30.
