Who Owns the Block: Berthoud block holds international surprises
BERTHOUD — What do a world-class French restaurant, an Oriental rug cleaning shop and a central Asian yurta have in common? They’re all located on the same block in downtown Berthoud.
Berthoud is equally distant from Longmont and Loveland and is picturesquely placed between Longs Peak and Interstate 25. The 500 block of Third Street is bounded by Mountain and Massachusetts avenues on the north and south and by Third and Fourth streets on the east and west.
The block is home to a hardware store, a bank, the Berthoud drug store, a Foursquare church and an auction house.

A women’s work-out facility, an after-school learning center, a real estate office and an insurance salesman also call the block home, along with the crown jewel of Berthoud restaurants, The Savoy.
The Savoy specializes in French cuisine prepared by Chef Jean Martini and his wife, Chantal. Escargot, frog legs and Coq au vin are on the menu, and Friday night is lobster night.
North of The Savoy, on an open piece of land, is a Kryghyz yurta. This is the mobile tent-like home of the people of the Tian Shan Mountains in central Asia. The Yurta is constructed of a wooden frame overlain with several felt coverings.
Next to the yurta is Castle Cleaning and Rug Co. The company specializes in the sale and care of Oriental rugs.
“The building is the coolest old building in town,´ said Phil Auserehl, owner of the building and Castle Cleaning. “This building was destined to be an Oriental rug shop.”
Why do these unique world treasures call Berthoud home? Auserehl believes it is the location.
“We are under 30 miles to all the cities in Northern Colorado. It’s all about location, location, location.”
