CU Museum of Natural History showing photo display on differences, similarities between North, South poles

BOULDER ? An exhibit of about 90 photos of the North and South poles is open at the University of Colorado at Boulder.

CU’s Museum of Natural History Changing Gallery is showing ?Pole to Pole: The Artic and Antarctic ? Photography by Donald M. Robinson? through March 1. The event is free.

Robinson shot the photos during four visits to the poles, and the exhibit demonstrates the similarities and differences of the poles. Both are cold regions occupying about 14 million square kilometers each, but they differ in climate, geographical development, evolution of plants and animals, and political status.

In Colorado, 1 in 3 women, 1 in 3 men and 1 in 2 transgender individuals will experience an attempted or completed sexual assault in their lifetime. During April, we recognize Sexual Assault Awareness Month with the hopes of increasing conversations about this very important issue.

?The Arctic is more subtle than the Antarctic, less severe,? Robinson said in a written statement.

In addition to the photography exhibit, research scientist John Behrendt of the Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research at CU will present ?Forty-five Years In and Out of Antarctica? on Feb. 7. He first traveled to Antarctica by ship in 1956 for graduate study for a U.S. Navy-supported scientific expedition to establish Ellsworth Station on the Filchner Ice Shelf. His presentation will be based on material from his 1999 book, ?Innocents on the Ice: A Memoir of Antarctic Exploration, 1957.?

Additionally, Boulder glaciologist Dan Stone will present ?Virgin Territory: A Mountaineering and Scientific Expedition on the Vinson Massif, Sentinel Range in Antarctica? on Nov. 14. In December, Stone was part of an expedition that included world-renowned climbers Conrad Anker and Jon Krakauer. The trip included an ascent of Mount Vinson, the highest point in Antarctica, via a previously unexplored route in the Sentinel Range. Stone conducted a study of snow accumulation, and the expedition was part of a public television series produced by Nova.
