9 arts groups join to present mythology series

Myths, tall tales and storytelling aren’t just for kids. An eight-month event focused on the power and cultural influence of myths and storytelling will begin in September, and will cater to myth lovers of all ages.

Nine cultural organizations in the Denver area have collaborated to present the event Discover Mythology! The event is being presented by the Colorado Ballet, Colorado Symphony, Denver Art Museum, Denver Center for the Performing Arts, Denver Theatre Company, Denver Museum of Nature and Science, Denver Public Library, Opera Colorado and Rocky Mountain PBS.

Each organization will present a different event or performance based around mythology. Organizations will offer activities catering to all ages including theater productions, dance, cultural exhibitions and fairy tales.

“Myths and fairy tales are the essential building blocks of our culture,” Rex Fuller, production manager of Opera Colorado said in a statement. “These myths articulate basic truths through larger-than-life storytelling and hold immense power for our culture.”

The eight-month series begins in September with the international premiere of Tantalus, a performance of the ancient Greek myth based on the Trojan war, at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts. Throughout the festival patrons are invited to attend such events as a ballet performance of Cinderella, a symphonic performance of Peter and the Wolf, a mythological art exhibit and lecture entitled The Power of Myth in Art, at the Denver Art Museum.

The events also will give young people and opportunity to explore myths and tall tales through storytelling and cultural programs provided by Mighty Myth, a program dedicated to immersing children in culture and the arts.

Program and event information can be found at www.arts/zoo.org/myth or by calling (303) 893-4100.
