Jan Haire leaps into consulting, recruiting

LOVELAND – Armed with 11 years of staffing experience and some disillusionment with the temporary-employment industry, Loveland-based staffing professional Jan Haire now offers consulting and executive recruitment services through her new company, Professional Resources.

Haire has worked for staffing agencies in Colorado and on the East Coast for more than a decade, most recently serving as branch manager for StaffMark Inc.’s Fort Collins office. She served as business-development manager in Colorado for OnCall Employment Services before OnCall was purchased by StaffMark in February 1996.

“I waited to see how that merger would go, but as so often happens when a larger company takes over and puts its procedures and processes in place, the local managers’ autonomy goes out the window,” Haire said.

One key qualification to consider when selecting a solar partner to install your system is whether they have an Operations and Maintenance (O&M) or service department. Since solar is a long-term asset with an expected lifecycle of 30 plus years, ongoing O&M should be considered up front. A trusted O&M partner will maximize your system’s energy output and therefor the return on your investment.

She saw a growing market for staffing consultants and decided to strike out on her own last September.

“A lot of smaller and midsize agencies now have to compete with much bigger firms, so for those who want to start a business or improve on one, I can help them put together a good sales strategy and internal processes that meet their customers’ requirements,” Haire said.

Haire says the staffing industry still has room for those smaller agencies because they can offer more-customized service than the larger companies. But in order to compete, they must have good sales and good systems.

In addition to her work as a consultant, Haire also offers her services as an executive recruiter.

“I’m taking recruitment to the next level,” she said. “That is, I’m moving from just executive search to include management positions — in particular, sales and marketing and human-resources people.

Executive search is a tricky business, Haire said, because everyone is a potential customer.

“The employees you want are working,” she said. “But as a staffing service, you can’t pull employees from companies you’re supplying temps to. There are providers of employees and users of employees, but as a staffing agency you’re both.”

Haire has aligned herself with several professional search firms and is marketing both her consulting and recruitment services on a national level.

“The response has been great,” she said. “I haven’t had to do any advertising so far, and referrals are coming in at the rate of three to five a week.”

A new local client is CTI Alliance in Loveland. CTI is a group of technology providers offering enterprise-level support to small and midsized companies.

Haire will provide companies within the alliance with technical-staffing resources, eventually developing a complete temporary and permanent telecommunications staffing service.

“There’s a huge demand for telecommunications employees right now,” she said.

Currently, Haire is working out of her home with one part-time employee, but hopes to move into an office and employ a larger staff by this time next year.
