Body Mind Center to offer non-traditional classes

BOULDER — The new Boulder Body Mind Center is a new foray for Pulse Fitness Centers, one expected to bring more non-traditional fitness classes under one roof.

The Body Mind Center is scheduled to open Jan. 5 at 2952 Baseline Road, right next to an existing Pulse Fitness Center. It will offer classes in yoga, martial arts, meditation, Pilates, NIA (neuromuscular integrative activity), nutrition and stress management.

“We’re really trying to integrate the physical aspect of fitness with the mind aspect of fitness. It’s something we’ve tried to integrate in the last few years,” says Scott Woodard, a co-owner of Pulse Fitness Centers. “It’s an exciting diversion, or direction, from just fitness.”

WomenGive, a program of United Way of Larimer County, was started in Larimer County in 2006 as an opportunity for women in our community to come together to help other women.

Demand for more non-traditional fitness classes has been strong in Pulse’s two Boulder locations, Woodard says. Yoga classes, for example, have grown from a couple of classes a week with just a handful of people, to six or seven per week with 15 to 20 people per class.

“What we’re trying to do is bring a lot of the different mind body programs under one roof, so people don’t have to go one place to do one thing and go another place to do something else,” Woodard says.

The new concept coalesces around Michael Kass, director of the new center, Woodard says. Kass previously owned the Power Dance studio and has written the book “Mental Muscle.” He was doing workshops for Pulse when the owners decided to create a new center. Assembling talent from small studios around town gives customers a great choice, Woodard says.

“People can come here with the comfort level of knowing the kind of quality they get, (and) they get an experience in a completely new discipline,” Woodard says.

Maxine and Charley Cropley, a natropathic physician, will head up the nutrition department of the center. They will kick off the season with the course “Food is Your Best Medicine.”

Pulse members can take as many classes at the Body Mind Center as they want. Non-members can buy punch cards to try different things or pay on a drop-in basis, Woodard says. For information, call Michael Kass at 442-3297.
