Duvall weighs options for starting newspaper

The Eye has become quite adept at ferreting out rumors, so we thought we’d see if what we’d heard about former Larimer County commissioner Janet Duvall were true.

Is she starting another community newspaper in the wake of the demise of Inside Fort Collins and, previously, the Triangle Review?

Duvall says the Fort Collins Coloradoan is more concerned with selling papers than serving the public, and it’s time to create a new voice for the city.

Business Cares: March 2024

WomenGive, a program of United Way of Larimer County, was started in Larimer County in 2006 as an opportunity for women in our community to come together to help other women.

“Frankly, I’m disgusted with the Coloradoan,” she said. “Fort Collins needs a paper with local focus and coverage. We need to stress all the good things that are happening in our city, not promote tension and confrontation.”
While Duvall said she has no immediate plans to start an alternative newspaper, she has discussed the possibility with others who believe the Coloradoan could use some competition.
“It’s too early to tell if it will happen,” she said. “But it’s something I’ve got on the back burner.”
Duvall said she must first determine if the business community will support the idea in terms of advertising and subscriptions.

The Eye has spied a change for the weird in Frederick.
The wildly popular Frederick West Business Park there has had its straight-forward name changed to Two Charlies Business Park.
Why the offbeat designation?
It seems that Doug and Wally Grant, well-respected businessmen in the Longmont area and owners of the business-park land, decided to pay respect to their relatives. The brothers apparently had two uncles, each named Charlie. Since the land has been in the family for some time, it seemed natural to pay tribute to the favorite uncles by naming the property after them.
Two Charlies Business Park is almost sold out of its first phase that includes five businesses, two others under contract and one lot left to sell. A second phase of 80 acres soon will be opened.
The Eye suspects that this ranks as one of the most unusual business-park names around the country. Any bets?

The ever-vigilant Eye spied an interesting item in Editor & Publisher, the industry rag for us muckrakers. E&P’s Feb. 22 edition includes an article on outstanding auto ads. Included right there in four color was one by none other than Ferrero Auto Center Inc. of Loveland.
It seems that Ferrero won the $5,000 Best of Show award at the National Automobile Dealers Association “Dandy” awards in Atlanta recently.
Ferrero’s winning entry? An ad for Dodge that includes the lines, “Performance? Uh-huh!”

Speaking of auto dealers, The Black Eye owes a follow-up to Garnsey and Wheeler Ford of Greeley. Last ish, we related a dispute involving Garnsey and the Town of Ault. Now it seems that the issue was apparently resolved even as The Eye went to press. And, it seems, Garnsey and Wheeler was working on the town’s behalf all along and eventually got Ford to pay the bill in dispute.
On behalf of the Town of Ault and ourselves, The Eye says, “Thanks, Garnsey and Wheeler.”
