Zayo boosts online speed in Weld school district

BOULDER – Zayo Group LLC announced Wednesday that it has completed a fiber-optic network for Weld County School District 6 in the Greeley/Evans area to boost the online capabilities of teachers and students in the district.

Schools were brought online throughout the spring, with nearly all 30 district schools and administration buildings connected to the network by the end of the school year.

Boulder-based Zayo installed 43 miles of dark fiber as part of the project, and has a 10-year contract to provide a managed private 1-gigabit Ethernet network connecting all of the district facilities.

Theresa Myers, director of communications for the district, said the 10-year contract and cost of installation comes with a price tag of nearly $2.6 million. But she said roughly 80 percent of that cost is being paid for through the federal government’s E-Rate Program that helps eligible schools and libraries obtain affordable telecommunications and Internet access.

The timing of the install was particularly key, Myers said, because most of the state’s standardized testing will be done online beginning in the fall.

“That’s why it was so important we got that done,” Myers said.

The upgrade has increased Internet speed in all of the district’s buildings in addition to providing wireless access in certain buildings or parts of buildings where it wasn’t previously available.
