Xcel presenting plan for future rates, renewables to PUC

Xcel Energy Inc. this week will make a series of filings with the Colorado Public Utilities Commission this week outlining everything from future rate plans to adding new renewable energy sources to its mix to instituting a grid fee.

The Denver Business Journal reports that Xcel, in its plan, is proposing to raise rates no more than 1.9 percent per year from 2018 to 2021. The plan could entail adding up to 1,000 megawatts of new solar and wind capacity in the state, and it also includes a request to become a “non-operating owner of natural gas reserves” to lock in low commodity prices for years to come.

Xcel is hoping to gain PUC approval of its plan by Jan. 1 of next year.
