Wulchin stepping down as president of FreeWave Technologies

BOULDER — FreeWave Technologies Inc. announced Wednesday that co-founder Steve Wulchin is stepping down as president of the Boulder-based tech company.

Wulchin, along with Jonathan Sawyer, founded FreeWave in 1993. Wulchin will remain the company’s largest shareholder and will sit on the firm’s board of directors. Sawyer left FreeWave in 2010 to start and lead Boulder-based XetaWave Inc.

FreeWave makes wireless radios for industrial markets such as oil and gas, military and precision agriculture.

“I have full confidence in the new executive team Kim Niederman has assembled, and the strategic direction they have laid out for FreeWave,” Wulchin said in a prepared statement. Niederman took over chief executive duties from Wulchin in 2014.

Wulchin plans to get more involved in the startup community, both from the standpoint of active involvement and mentorship, as well as private investment, according to a company statement.

Under Wulchin’s leadership, the company deployed millions of radios to more than 5,000 customers worldwide.
