Well near Longmont school to be plugged

Oil and gas company TOP Operating next week will begin plugging and abandoning a controversial 34-year-old well near homes and Trail Ridge Middle School in Longmont.

The Times-Call reports that the move is the culmination of a 3-year-old compromise between the company and the city. TOP will plug and abandon the Rider well before school starts Aug. 16, and the city will pay part of those costs as well as the cost to drill a new well farther from the school and homes.

The controversy began in 2006, when Engle Homes complained to the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission that groundwater tests found benzene at a level of 491 parts per million, far exceeding the state limit of five parts per million for the colorless, flammable chemical that is toxic to humans.
