Vestas’ Colorado factories win major new orders

Vestas Wind Systems A/S’ factories in Colorado will manufacture 1,500 megawatts of wind turbines for wind power plants in North America, South America and Europe, the Danish wind turbine manufacturer said Thursday.

The wind turbines, which will be made at Vestas’ Colorado factories including plants in Windsor and Brighton, include an agreement to manufacture 400 megawatts of the company’s first V110-2.0 megawatt wind turbines for U.S. wind farms developed by EDP Renovaveis.

Vestas expects to deliver and commission the 1,500 megawatts of turbines in 2014 and 2015. The company did not disclose the names and specific locations of the wind farms, but said the turbines were part of a master supply agreement.

Vestas’ factories in Colorado will manufacture the blades, towers and other components for the projects, which include five-year service agreements, Vestas said.

The announcement comes one day after Vestas reported an $83 million loss during the second quarter. The company expected further job cuts through the end of the year, but added that it expected to see significant U.S. orders for wind turbines in the second half of 2013.

“Due to customer demand, we are gradually growing our employee base at our Brighton and Windsor blade factories and we expect our tower factory in Pueblo to be fully utilized in 2014,” a Vestas spokesman said in an email.
