Unemployment rates in region holding steady

Weld County experienced a slight dip in unemployment from January to February, while the jobless rates in Boulder, Broomfield and Larimer counties remained flat or ticked upward, according to a report released Friday by the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment.

Weld County’s non-seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in February was 6.7 percent, down from 6.8 percent in January and down 1.7 percentage points compared with the same month a year ago. The county had 120,964 people employed and 8,706 looking for jobs.

Larimer and Broomfield counties’ unemployment rates remained unchanged from January to February, while Boulder’s rate increased from 5.1 to 5.2 percent. All four counties’ rates, however, were down compared with February of 2013.

Larimer’s unemployment rate in February was 5.5 percent, down from 6.3 percent for the same month year ago. The county had 175,701 people employed and 10,237 looking for work.

Broomfield’s rate was 6.0 percent in February, down from 6.8 percent for the same month a year ago. The county had 30,155 employed and 1,923 out of work.

Boulder County’s jobless rate increased for the second month in a row after dipping to 4.4 percent in December. But the 5.2 percent rate in February was still down from 5.8 percent for the same month a year earlier. The county had 173,560 employed and 9,592 looking for work.

The numbers fell in line with state figures that showed Colorado’s seasonally adjusted jobless rate of 6.1 percent in February stayed unchanged from January. The state added 6,200 jobs month-over-month for a total of 2,422,300.

The national unemployment rate in February increased one-tenth of a percentage point from January to 6.7 percent.
