UCHealth’s new Longmont facility to be named Longs Peak Hospital

LONGMONT — “Longs Peak Hospital” will be the name of the $170 million facility that University of Colorado Health plans to build on the east edge of Longmont.

“We had a lot of input from the community about what the name should be, and that name sort of rose to the top,” said Dan Weaver, UCHealth’s media relations director. “It reflects the proud history of Longmont, which was named after that mountain.”

Weaver said Monday that UCHealth began reaching out to various stakeholders last month to get ideas for what to name the three-story, 48-bed facility, to be located on the northwest corner of Colorado Highway 119 and County Line Road.

“We surveyed many Longmont residents and physicians, along with Longmont Clinic staff members, and the choice of this name is based on the feedback we received,” Weaver said Monday. “It’s important to point out that the UCHealth Longs Peak Hospital name honors the extensive history of Longmont, which was also named after that famous Colorado peak.

The design of the hospital uses regional stone and wood building products to maintain a local feel, he said, adding that “the building marks a welcoming entry into the city of Longmont” from the east.

“We’re aiming to achieve LEED certification because of our commitment to the environment and sustainability,” Weaver said. “Hospitals are notoriously not too energy efficient,” he said, “so we want to do better.”

Groundbreaking for the 165,000-square-foot facility is planned for this fall, with opening late next year or early in 2017. UCHealth Longs Peak Hospital is to include an intensive-care unit, operating rooms, emergency department, cardiac services, a birth center, an ambulatory surgery center and a heliport. According to UCHealth publicity materials, about 500 jobs are expected to be involved in construction of the hospital, with 200 new, permanent jobs once it’s built.

Haselden Construction is the general contractor on the project, supported by WHR Architects, BHA Design Inc., Affiliated Engineers Inc., JVA Consulting Engineers and Project One Integrated Services.

Aurora-based UCHealth struck a deal last year to purchase Longmont Clinic, across Mountain View Avenue from Longmont United Hospital. LUH and Centura Health finalized a management agreement earlier this month. UCHealth also has a cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery center in Longmont, as well as University of Colorado Sports Medicine, an eye-care center and a physical-therapy center in Boulder. Its hospitals include Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins and Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland.
