Construction on an express lane on the Boulder Turnpike has created 380 jobs, the Colorado Department of Transportation said Friday.

WomenGive, a program of United Way of Larimer County, was started in Larimer County in 2006 as an opportunity for women in our community to come together to help other women.

Some of the employees participated in the Workforce Development Program, which helped contractors find qualified workers and provided opportunities for people without construction or design experience to gain entry into the field. The program combines the transportation department’s On the Job Training program with the Regional Transportation District’s Workforce Initiative Now program.

The partnership helps train general craft field employees and professional service employees.

General craft employees include equipment operators, truck drivers, carpenters, and others who aid with operations in the field. Professional service employees support the project in quality assurance, inspection, materials testing, accounting, document control, public information, computer-aided drafting and engineering.

The U.S. 36 project involves building an express lane in each direction on U.S. 36, replacing bridges, constructing a commuter bikeway and adding bus transit improvements and tolling equipment.

The first phase of the project, from Federal Boulevard to 88th Street, will open to the public in spring 2015. The second phase, from 88th Street to Table Mesa Drive, will open in 2016.
