U.S. 34 to reopen between Loveland, Estes Park

LOVELAND – U.S. 34 between Loveland and Estes Park will reopen Thursday, the Colorado Department of Transportation said Friday.

Gov. John Hickenlooper will join transportation department, Estes Park and Loveland officials to mark the official opening of the highway, closed two months ago due to massive flooding in the Big Thompson Canyon that destroyed parts of the highway.

The reopening of U.S. 34 will restore access on all routes into and out of Estes Park.

Hickenlooper, transportation department Executive Director Don Hunt and local officials at 11 a.m. will paint the final stripes on U.S. 34 to officially mark the completion of the temporary repairs and the opening of the highway.

“The public is welcome,” transportation department Amy Ford said. “They will be able to join us to convoy in.”

Details on how the public can reach the ceremony are forthcoming. The highway will reopen fully later that afternoon.
