Two firms in Fort Collins advance in Cleantech Open

DENVER — Two companies based in FortCollins have made it to the regional finals of the Cleantech Open, securing a chance to compete for the title of top national clean-tech startup.

Behavioral Response Technologies Inc. and eFlux LLC, along with Phoenix-based NVI Algae Products, were named finalists Thursday night at McNichols Civic Center in Denver.

The Rocky Mountain Region is one of eight that constitute the nonprofit Cleantech Open’s national accelerator program.

Behavioral Response Technologies develops instrumentation that enhances the naturally occurring health and production processes of dairy and beef animals.

E-Flux’s technology monitors and tests gases in soil that can lead to reducing costs of remediation of petroleum spills.

NVI Algae Products designs and manufactures solutions that maximize yield and enable low-cost production for producers of nutraceuticals, food, feed and biofuels from algae.

The Rocky Mountain Region is one of eight nationwide that will have representative companies competing at the Global Forum next month. The Rocky Mountain Region includes Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming, at the Global Forum next month.

Region finalists each won a Startup in a Box package that includes cash and donated services worth up to $20,000.

Also, Behavioral Response Technologies won the Regional Sustainability Award, an honor given to the team that most effectively incorporates a triple-bottom-line approach to scaling its business. The award comes with a $5,000 cash prize sponsored by Encana Inc.

Cascade Plasma Energy of Fort Collins took home the People’s Choice Award, given to the firm that gave the top company pitch during a two-minute business “pitch slam.” Cascade Plasma Energy manufactures fuels and electrical power from municipal and commercial waste streams, creating both electrical power and synthetic fuels, such as ethanol, methanol, diesel, gasoline and jet fuel.
