Tolmar expanding to Windsor

Pharmaceutical company Tolmar Inc. will expand its manufacturing operations with a new plant in Windsor.

Last month, Tolmar closed a deal to buy the 146,000-square-foot building at 1201 Cornerstone Drive in Windsor. The company will expand its manufacturing capabilities at the facility, specifically in topical prescription products.

Tolmar plans to add jobs with the opening of the facility, but the majority of the positions will not be created until 2014, when the plant is complete. It will take approximately two years to renovate and equip the building to suit the Food and Drug Administration’s requirements, according to company CEO Mike Duncan.

Eventually, 200 people will be employed at the new facility. Some of the jobs will be newly created and others will be transfers from Tolmar’s six Fort Collins locations.

The company right now employs 385 in Fort Collins and a total of 637 regular employees across the country. Tolmar also has facilities in Batesville, Ark.

Tolmar operates four business units: oncology/urology, topical general business, contract manufacturing business and a dental products business. Three of these units were profitable as of May, and the dental products unit is expected to be profitable by 2013.

The company plans to add a fifth unit, also in two years, and release an initial nongeneric dermatology product in 2016.

The company was founded as Atrix Technologies in 1990 with four employees.
