Texas-based Adeptus Health behind new Broomfield hospital

BROOMFIELD – Texas-based Adeptus Health Inc. (NYSE: ADPT), the parent company of First Choice Emergency Room, is the company behind a planned 52-bed general hospital in Broomfield that could be completed by spring of 2016.

Adeptus officials could not be reached on Friday. But signs have been increasingly pointing toward the company, and Broomfield city officials confirmed that the group has applied for building permits for the project, which has been ushered through the planning process by developer Venture Medical Holdings of Tampa, Fla., under the name Colorado General Hospital.

The hospital is slated for a five-acre parcel of land within the Arista development along U.S. Highway 36. A representative for Arista developer Wiens Capital Management said the hospital’s developers had recently closed on the purchase of the land on which the 86,600-square-foot facility will be built. The sale price was not immediately available through county records.

The hospital will be Broomfield’s first but could be just one of two that Adeptus begins building in the state this year. Adeptus has plans for a similar but smaller hospital in Colorado Springs, where permit applications have also been submitted. Developers recently closed on the $5.2 million purchase of land where that hospital, also dubbed Colorado General Hospital, will sit. Plans there originally called for the same size setup as in Broomfield but were reduced in scope after some neighbors expressed concerns about the size of the facility.

The two hospitals would mark a major entry onto the Colorado health-care scene by Adeptus. But the company, headquartered in Lewisville, Texas, has been gaining a foothold in Colorado for the past couple of years, opening First Choice Emergency Room standalone ER facilities in Arvada, Aurora, Broomfield, Commerce City, Firestone, Littleton and Thornton.

The publicly traded company reported $210.7 million in revenue for 2014, double that of 2013, with a 2014 net loss of $3.4 million. Adeptus, in partnership with Dignity Health, recently opened a hospital in the Phoenix area called Dignity Health Arizona General Hospital. Adeptus has another hospital slated for completion later this year in Carrollton, Texas.

The three-story Broomfield hospital will sit just east of Wadsworth Parkway on the south side of State Highway 128. It will include an emergency room as well as both in-patient and out-patient surgical services.

Joe Zepeda, senior project manager for Wiens Capital Management, said Friday that he believes Adeptus plans to break ground soon.

“They’re itching to get going,” said Zepeda, who noted that the hospital could employ more than 300 people. “We couldn’t be more excited about the opportunity.”
