Startup distillery wins medals for tequila

BOULDER – After just five months on the market, a tequila from a company headquartered in Boulder won medals in a pair of national competitions in March.

Suerte Tequila’s Blanco and Anejo varieties won silver medals and its Reposado took a bronze at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, held March 21-24. Each bottle and the set of three took silver medals for packaging and design, after the set of three had won first place at the Denver International Spirits Competition March 2-3. Reposado won a gold and the other two varieties took silver in Denver.

In an online competition in 2012, Tequila.net gave each tequila in the Suerte line a “Best of the Best” award, and Blanco and Reposado received a “Judge Favorite” recognition.

“The honor of receiving these awards is a true testament to the craft spirit we took deliberate and precious steps creating, said Suerte co-founder and chief executive Laurence Spiewak in a press statement. “Also, to win two packaging and design awards in a row has us elated with our young brand.”

Sales, marketing and branding of Suerte is done at its Boulder headquarters. Colorado Spirits Importers LLC is the company’s legal name. It is an importer, and because of Colorado liquor laws it needs another company to distribute the product. Suerte relies on Elite Brands Distributors, but Suerte otherwise oversees the process from start to finish, Spiewak has said.

Suerte began producing tequila in October. The brand was developed and launched by Spiewak and chief operating officer Lance Sokol, Suerte grows the ingredients and produces and bottles the tequila in the Mexican state of Jalisco. Distillers produce small batches by hand using a tahona wheel to extract the juice from 100 percent pure blue agave that was grown on a single estate, Spiewak has said.

The word “suerte” means “luck” in Spanish.
