Sports Authority closing all stores

New shopping centers in Fort Collins and Longmont officially have big new vacancies to fill with this week’s news that liquidators won an auction for bankrupt Sports Authority’s assets.

Going out of business sales are expected to begin next week as the sporting goods retailer shuts down all 463 of its stores across the country.

The Englewood-based company announced in February that its S.A. Elite store in Boulder would be among 140 stores to close as Sports Authority tried to right its fiscal ship. But now a second store in Boulder, as well as two in Fort Collins, one in Longmont and one in Greeley will also shutter.

Sports Authority was one of the first retailers to open in the new Village at the Peaks shopping center in Longmont last fall, moving across the street from the Burlington Village shopping center. Now both locations could soon be sitting empty.

In Fort Collins, meanwhile, Sports Authority had planned to move its store at 425 S. College Ave. into the newly renovated Foothills mall this summer.

Sports Authority’s other store in Boulder is at 3320 28th St., while the retailer also has stores at 4114 Centerplace Dr. in Greeley and at 4417 Corbett Dr. in Fort Collins.
