In 2018, Platte River’s Board of Directors passed a Resource Diversification Policy, setting a new course for how Platte River provides energy.
The facility will employ 15 people in its first year of operation, according to a statement from The Broe Group, based in Denver. Schlumberger will employ five additional people annually for the following three years for a total of 30 employees with an average salary of nearly $74,000.
“It’s a great location for them, and it’s a great opportunity for us with high-paying jobs,” said Stacy Johnson, director of economic development for the town of Windsor.
Windsor Town Board members approved $144,000 in incentives for Schlumberger during a meeting Monday. The town will waive water, sewer and drainage fees as part of the incentives package.
The town expects to receive a total of $401,000, including sales- and property-tax revenue and less the cost of the incentives and city services, from Schlumberger over the next 10 years.
Schlumberger’s decision to locate a facility in Northern Colorado comes amid an ongoing oil- and natural-gas drilling boom in Weld County, where 80 percent of the state’s oil was produced last year. Schlumberger’s operation will distribute tools and machinery to help capture oil and gas.
Schlumberger employs 126,000 people in more than 85 countries and has principal offices in Houston, Paris, London and The Hague. A company representative did not immediately return a phone message seeking comment on the Windsor facility.
Schlumberger shares fell 2 percent to $102.39 in afternoon trading.
Oil field services companies Baker Hughes Inc. (NYSE: BHI) and Halliburton Co. (NYSE: HAL) also have a presence in Weld County.
Halliburton maintains the largest presence of oil field service companies in Weld County with its facility in Fort Lupton. The company, which also has a facility in the Great Western Industrial Park, is said to perform most of the hydraulic fracturing services in Weld. Hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, involves pumping fluid down a drilled hole to extract oil and natural gas from dense rock formations deep underground.
