Sam’s Club moves up construction timeline for Longmont store

LONGMONT — The developer of the Village at the Peaks shopping center in Longmont said Wednesday that Sam’s Club, one of three anchor retailers, is set to break ground on its new store in June.

That’s a change from earlier this year when developers had told the Longmont city council that construction on the Sam’s Club store wouldn’t begin until the first quarter of 2016.

“We are very pleased that Sam’s Club is ready to break ground at the property, almost a year earlier than they had previously stated,” said Allen Ginsborg, managing director and principal of NewMark Merrill Mountain States.

The developer said construction of the $90 million open-air retail project that replaces the Twin Peaks Mall at 1250 S. Hover St., is progressing well, and it expects some retailers to open by this fall, according to a prepared statement.

The developer also named key construction partners for the project. The architect is Denver-based The Mulhern Group LTD. Site work and infrastructure general contractor is McCarty Excavation and Construction based in Bayfield, northeast of Durango in in southwest Colorado. The building general contractor is Colorado Structures Inc. in Colorado Springs. Several other local construction and development partners, including landscape architects, will be announced in the coming months.

In March, the construction team laid the foundation for the beginning of the “Village” portion of the project, the future location for The Melt and other restaurants and retailers. Earlier in the year, the construction team raised the steel framework for anchor Whole Foods and Wyatt’s Wine & Spirits, building on work in December to create similar framework for the walls of the anchor Regal Cinemas movie theater.

The former Dillard’s building has been gutted to be rebuilt for The Sports Authority, Gold’s Gym and Party City.

Eighty percent of the project’s space has been leased, according to NewMark Merrill. Other retailers that have signed on include Chuck & Don’s Pet Food and Supplies, Parry’s Pizza, Bad Daddy’s Burger Bar, Fuzzy’s Taco Shop, Visionworks, Supercuts, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless, Luxury Nails and Spa and Pacific Dental.
