RTD schedules public meetings on fare hikes, U.S. 36 route

BOULDER — The Regional Transportation District has scheduled a number of public hearings in the Boulder Valley to discuss the district’s new bus rapid transit service along U.S. Highway 36, scheduled to begin in January, as well as proposed changes to the system’s current fare structure.

The U.S. 36 service plan includes consolidating the various “B” routes and serving them with “Flatiron Flyer” vehicles. The plan would mean a 10.7 percent increase in service hours and 16 percent increase in the number of trips.

Local hearings on the plan will be held at 6 p.m. Monday in the Boulder Creek Room at Boulder Public Library, 1001 Arapahoe Ave. in Boulder; at 6 p.m. March 26 in the Zang Spur and Bal Swan conference rooms at the George Di Ciero City and County Building, 1 Des Combes Drive in Broomfield; and 6 p.m. April 1 at the Louisville Recreation Center, 900 W. Via Appia Way in Louisville.

The fare-restructuring plan includes raising non-discounted fares from $2.25 to $2.60 for local routes, from $4 to $4.50 for express routes such as the BOLT that runs between Boulder and Longmont, from $5 to $5.50 for regional routes such as the B routes between Boulder and Denver, and $10 for all SkyRide fares to Denver International Airport. Transfers would be eliminated but would be replaced by the sale of day passes, since RTD says most bus riders make round trips and could use the passes for unlimited trips in a day.

The increases would not affect local routes within Longmont, which remain free through 2015 thanks to a program funded by the city, county and state.

Local hearings on the fare restructuring will be held at 6:30 p.m. April 1 in Room A/B at the Longmont Public Library, 409 Fourth Ave. in Longmont and at 6 p.m. April 6 in the Boulder Creek Room at Boulder Public Library.
