RES Americas building Jake and Elwood energy-storage centers in Chicago

BROOMFIELD — Renewable Energy Systems Americas Inc. announced on Tuesday it will develop and construct two energy-storage systems just outside Chicago that are named after the characters in “The Blues Brothers,” a movie made in 1980 in Chicago.

The Elwood Energy Storage Center will be on Pilsen Road in West Chicago, and the Jake Energy Storage Center will be on Brandon Road in Joliet. Both storage centers will be tied to Commonwealth Edison’s grid, the largest electric utility in Illinois.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Broomfield-based RES Americas, is part of the RES Group, an international renewable energy developer based in the United Kingdom.

Each of the centers will be able to store 7.8 megawatt-hours of energy using lithium iron phosphate batteries. Each project will have 11 systems containing thousands of individual battery cells, power conditioning equipment, safety and monitoring systems. The energy storage control and dispatch systems will be developed and provided by RES Americas. The battery-storage modules will be supplied by Los Angeles-based BYD America, a subsidiary of BYD Company Ltd. in China.

Construction is expected to begin on both projects this winter with completion by August 2015.
